Houston, We have a problem...

After walking the neighborhood and getting 4 signatures on the spot (Everyone who was home - except the mean hair salon lady), I walked the neighborhood again with my daughter and put one of those flyers in my last 'chica' related post on each of the doors to the houses where I hadn't talked with anyone... and also on the mean hair salon lady's door...

Several days go by... waiting patiently... Yay! - a few of the flyers are returned and I have now 9 signatures... out of a total of 37 (I finally counted). Several of the returned flyers included a note saying that the folks were interested in buying some of the eggs once we had them, and they were excited about the idea.

Well - then yesterday, I'm happily stitching away at the sewing machine (working on the star block) while kidos are napping... and I notice the flashing light on my answering machine. I pushed the 'play' button: "This is your neighbor across the street, Bertha Boufaunt* with the gray brick house, I signed your form the other day about the chickens, and I've thought a lot about that, and I'm sorry I signed it. I want you to take my name off the list, the more I thought about it the more I am against it. Please remove my name from that list! Again this is Bertha Boufaunt*, Please remove me. Thanks a lot." (*name is fictional)

Hmm.... Well, doesn't that just make your day a whole lot cheerier?! NOT!

I wonder what her problem is - I may have to go talk with her again... I wonder if she talked with the mean hair salon lady...she sounded really pissed off actually, like I had conned her into something.

Ugh...

I'm wondering if it might be more productive to go to the town council and try to get the ordinance changed. There are many urban areas who allow a certain number of chickens without special permits... in fact, our Capital City itself is one of them! Anyway - there's an update for those of you who were waiting for one...

Here's a picture of the new canopy for the playset - I made it on Sunday:

Entire playset - note... new canopy on top...

Close-up of canopy material... blue/green stripes. (It's sunny, but windy today!)

Good luck. Please keep us posted. I'm wanting chickens too but we're in town and really don't have any close neighbors. Trying to figure out if I want to deal with getting approval or not.

UG!!! Makes me mad for you!! I just can't beleive they can dictate whether or not you can have chickens. If you were going to start a chicken farm I could understand-but just wanting a few to help feed your family. That just isn't right.

I like the canopy! About the chickens...I would say try to get the ordinace changed...I bet that you will be able to find more support for that than geting a consensus from 37 people. In my town we are allowed 3 hens in the city limits without a permit. Keep trying, you can effect change in your community!!! Good for you!

That play set is just amazing - I have never seen anything like it - I want one in my yard. The canopy looks great too.
