15 Seconds of Fame?

Whew! Yesterday, the local NBC station ran a segment on my Chickens for Wake Forest story and petition. It was taped on Thursday, and I couldn't wait to see when it would be on the air, and if it would help or hurt our cause... I have yet to find out that last bit yet!
It was one of those 'butterfly in your stomach' moments while the reporter was asking questions. I wish I had written down what I wanted to say on poster board or something, and mounted it up behind her so I could keep my thoughts straight! Dave Bissette did a wonderful job of seeming calm and put-together on the air. He made his points very clearly, and said a lot of things in a way that would really make people think about thier opinions about the idea. I think my on-air part was OK, I know I said a lot more things that could have been used to give the story more of a 'serious' flavor to it, but the way they put the story together is fine really. I would have liked a little more about the fact that most people who oppose chickens are those who aren't educated about the facts of keeping chickens, or have preconceived notions which are unfounded. I guess they really had to keep the story in the 'neutral zone' so they would be appear fair and unbiased. The shots with the kids are really cute and I think they help appeal to the emotional side of people... my daughter's laugh is really cute during the shorter segment.
There are more details on my wfchickens blog if you want to read about the experience a little more.
Here is a link to the TV Segments - there is a short 'teaser' one, and then the 'main' one. Let me know what you think - and if you know anyone in Wake Forest, send them over to sign the petition!
(If you're looking for quilting/crafting/sewing stuff...... sorry - not today!)

I am also proud of you - you wouldn't have done that when I first met you (I know we were only 16) but I think it is awesome that you did it! Awesome, awesome, awesome! Beca cannot wait to come see the chickens!

congratulations on the segments! i am seriously not getting the grouchiness about it. especially when you're offering fresh eggs to your neighbors. hell, i think i'd pay you to house a chicken for me if i lived next to you (as i am fairly certain i would forget to feed them).

Great job. It will be interesting to hear what the feedback will be. Some folks just do not get it at all. We've had chickens as pets and they are great.

Em, I'm sure you'll be successful with your chicken campaign, though working through the layers (ha) of city bureaucracy does take time. Thanks for your comments on my blog! I think NC is a beautiful state (after WA, of course).

I'm rooting for you! Great job so far. I know that in some areas if your chicken is a 4-H project, you can have them. Maybe worth looking into? Good luck.

I thought that the piece was good...I couldn't figure out how the dude in the car thought that they were going to be going free range in your yard. You kids were really cute holding the chickens and feeding them. Good for you, very brave! If you can't speak up for what you want in life who can? Three cheers for keeping the ball moving on this issue.

Em, great job in the news cast. It really takes determination to change things but it sounds as though you have the backbone to do this. Great job!
