Family Road Trip - Day Two

Day Two
We left from the campground in Southern Ohio and drove North toward Michigan... After the kids and I enjoyed a few Krispy Kreme donuts that we brought along, Mike decided he needed something more substantial, and we stopped at "The spot to eat" in Sidney, Ohio. The sandwich he got was ginormous - a country fried steak sandwich that was easily 2 inches larger all around than the bun it was on... crazy!

After driving a fair bit more, the kids were hungry and we decided to find another small town to stop in. This is Anderson's ice cream...

And this is Taylor Anne's.... Cute, aren't they?

After driving for quite a long time, we arrived at Warren Dunes State Park, on Lake Michigan. These pictures don't do the dunes justice... they are HUGE... bigger than I remember Jockey's Ridge being, but the last time I was there was when I was in 5th grade, so my memory is probably not accurate. Those are fully grown trees on top of the dunes... they're actually in the process of being overtaken by the sand.

We HAD to swim in Lake Michigan... It was weird having waves with fresh water. The beach was very nice, lots of pretty sand. The water was kinda murky close to shore and had a lot of floating algae in it... I didn't really want to swim in it - but it was much nicer out past the waves, and there was a nice sandbar. The kids had a lot of fun playing in the waves.

I thought the details about how the dunes were formed and the history of the state park were interesting, but of course no one else wanted to take the time to read the info... I took a picture so I could look at the info later.

After we went for a swim, we were on the lookout for a good dinner place - luckily there was one down the road at the "Red Arrow Road House." The owner of the camp store pointed us in that direction, and I'm glad he did! On our way out of the camp, we saw some turkeys!


At the Red Arrow Road House, Taylor Anne practiced her knitting, and Anderson scarfed down his homemade macaroni and cheese... it was SO yummy!



After filling our bellies, we headed back to watch the sun set over Lake Michigan. It's not often we get to see a beautiful sunset over a large body of water. It was a lot of work getting up to the top of the dune... but it was worth it. The sunlight was beautiful.



Once the sun was down, it was time to get in the tent (the mosquitoes in Michigan are HUGE!) Taylor Anne and I did a little bit of knitting, and then headed to bed... we were getting up super early in the morning since we had to drive 10 hours that next day!
