Community Gardening

Community Gardens have always just made me feel good. Reading about one in a story book, seeing one being built in a vacant NYC lot on TV, thinking about sharing a large garden space with a bunch of other folks who just want space to grow things... When I was in college, our program (Landscape Gardening) had something similar to a community garden, and it was really wonderful. The students were split into groups, and each group had a 10x10 garden area they were in charge of designing, planting, and maintaining over the course of the season. It was fun to see all of the different plans everyone came up with... lots of us chose plants that we had never grown before, and it was refreshing and a real community-building experience. I really love the way community gardens are able to do just that - build a community. Please check out this article (warning - it's kinda long) about a local community garden in NC. I find it rather inspiring on a windy, rainy, stuck-insidy, day...

Speaking of wind and rain... we had an unexpected visitor this morning right in the midst of Tropical Storm Hanna blustering through... a yellow belly slider turtle showed up at the end of our driveway... not sure if she washed down the street to our house - or was venturing up the street against the deluge of water in the gutter, but we thought it wasn't really a safe place for her, so we took her to the pond in our neighborhood to live for a while (we hope!)
Here she is on our porch... not too keen to come out of her shell with the kids and the cats running around. She was a fully grown turtle too... her shell was about 10 inches front to back, and about 6 1/2 inches at the widest point. She looked healthy.
Here she is sitting in the grass by the pond... we didn't want to just plunk her in the water... we wanted to let her get adjusted to her surroundings a little.
She finally takes a peek around the place, then jets off toward the pond... check out the video!

Isn't that cute???!!!

I hope you're all having a great weekend out there in blogland! Tomorrow we have plans to spread the last of the cruddy 'town mulch' we got a few weeks ago, and then meet a family we're hoping to carpool with to school!

That is cute - especially the kids running after it. It's sweet when a thing like a turtle gets kids excited.

I know I don't comment enough - like never but I love reading your adventures, and I think you're blue ribbon worthy and you should stop over and pick it up :)

Community Gardens are such a neat concept. I got to visit one this summer in the Black Mounain area. So neat for folks who don't have much room at home or who need a little help.

The turtle pics are amazing. Wish we had gotten some rain from Hannah-but we didn't get a drop.
